Measuring Temperature with the MAX1358 DAQ System

Sun, 2008-09-21 18:15
Sunnyvale CA, USA -- This application note explains how to use the internal and external temperature sensors on the Maxim Model MAX1358 data acquisition system. The temperature circuits for the MAX1358/MAX1359/MAX1360 are identical, therefore any reference to the MAX1358 also applies to the MAX1359 and MAX1360. A step-by-step approach guides the user through the setup, measurement, and calculation of the temperature. The MAX1358 features internal circuitry to measure the internal die temperature. The internal circuitry can also be used with an external transistor for a low-cost remote temperature sensor. The four-current temperature measurement method described in this application note can be used to achieve the ±0.5 and ±1.0 typical accuracy specified in the MAX1358 data sheet.

PPL planning to develop large-scale solar energy plant in New Jersey

Fri, 2008-09-19 02:00
Warren County facility would provide 5 megawatts of clean energy to regional grid Allentown PA, USA --- PPL Renewable Energy on Monday (9/15) announced that it has taken steps toward development of the first phase of a large-scale solar power system that converts the energy from sunlight into clean, renewable electricity in Warren County, NJ. PPL is working with local officials to receive approvals and permits to begin construction on a 5-megawatt facility, which would be the first utility-scale solar project to be developed in New Jersey. Utility-scale projects supply power directly to the electric grid or large wholesale customers instead of to a single retail customer. PPL has the ability to expand the solar facility, which, if fully developed, would have a capacity of up to 50 megawatts.

Real Time Thermal Rating

Tue, 2008-09-16 02:00
Sophisticated Answers for Modern Power Management Cologne, Germany -- As demand for electricity continues to grow, so do the challenges to power companies and power grids. Temperature monitoring is a key factor for the optimisation of underground power transmission and distribution installations. The conductor temperature depends on the load, but other factors such as the thermal soil resistivity, the power line arrangement, adjacent cables and other sources dissipating heat into the surrounding area have an important impact on the performance of the installation. The LIOS temperature monitoring solution is based on using passive optical fibres as temperature sensors, either integrated directly inside a high voltage cable or mounted externally on the cable insulation.

Sweet Solution for Measuring Honey Moisture

Wed, 2008-09-10 02:00
New Honey Refractometer Puts Laboratory Precision in the Palm of Your Hand Cleveland OH, USA -- (PRWEB) -- MISCO introduces a new line of handheld digital refractometers designed specifically for state and federal inspectors responsible for the measurement and grading of honey. Although designed for government inspectors, the MISCO Digital Honey Refractometer is equally beneficial to professional beekeepers, honey producers, honey mixers, honey brokers, or anyone requiring the absolute most accurate, repeatable readings of moisture content and percent solids in honey. The moisture content of honey is critical to its grade and overall quality. If the moisture content is too high, there is a risk of fermentation; too low and it may crystallize or granulize. The battle between fermentation and crystallization in honey production is a delicate balancing act that can hinge on just a couple percent. An accurate measurement of moisture content, using a refractometer, represents the best weapon in this battle.

Helica™ Fiber-Optic Temp Sensor to 1000 °C

Wed, 2008-09-03 02:00
A new addition to Chiral Photonics’ fiber-optic sensing line underscores its unique ability to address harsh conditions Pine Brook, New Jersey – Chiral Photonics is proud to announce the newest addition to its Helica™ products – a robust fiber optic temperature sensor designed for the most demanding industrial and R&D applications that require stability to 1000 °C. The sensor was designed for applications ranging from weld monitoring and control to turbine engine service and design. The sensing element is a monolithic glass fiber and is as stable as the silica glass. It is not reliant on any moving parts or coatings and the sensor packaging can be tailored to suit the application needs.. The Helica Temperature Sensor is based on Chiral Photonics’ patented chiral grating, which is fabricated by twisting, or microforming, the fiber as it is passed through a miniature heat zone to produce a distinct dip in the transmission spectrum. The spectral position of the dip in this chiral fiber changes with temperature allowing it to be used as a temperature sensor.
